Growth and condition of Eleotris vittata from New Calabar River Port Harcourt Nigeria

Kingsley O Chukwu

Abstract

The growth and condition of Eleotris vittata was studied in the New Calabar River from samples collected over a period of twelve months. This study was to provide the much needed data for the management of the stock as there was hardly any information on the species from that water body. Regression analysis using the power curve “W = aTLb” showed that the growth of the fish was negatively allometric across the stations; the same was recorded for male and female samples analyzed separately. Estimates for condition factor (K) calculated by the equation K = W/TL3 x 100, showed that the fish was at its best in March but recorded the least condition in January. Although the general condition of the fish in the New Calabar River was good, there was no significant difference between the growth and condition of the fish across the stations.
