Information Needs Assessment of Women Involved in Vegetable Production in Edo State, Nigeria

In order to ensure appropriate farm technologies and modern practices to women farmers involved in vegetable production, there is need to identify their information needs and access to this information. This study therefore, assessed the information needs of women involved in vegetable production in Edo state, Nigeria. The objectives of the study were to describe the social economic characteristics of women involved in vegetable production, identify respondents’ profile of information needs in vegetable production, and discover constraints faced by respondent in accessing vegetable production information. Simple random sampling and snowballing sampling techniques were used to obtain a sample size of 233 the study. A well-structured questionnaire was used to collect data. Data collected were analysed using statistical tools such as; frequencies, percentages and means. Findings revealed that respondents’ mean age was 45 years. Majority of the respondents in were married. A higher proportion had primary education. Respondents’ farming experience mean age was 13 years. Most of the respondents had no contact with extension agents. Recommendations made include: provision of adult education to enable needed agricultural information through modern communication channels such as mass media services, assistance from government and nongovernmental agencies to overcome farmers’ current challenges and that the presence of extension agents should be felt in the study area.
