Abstract

Abstract

Phenological investigation of the angiospermic flora in Turanala a riverine wetland of Gorakhpur District in Uttar Pradesh of India was conducted during 2012-2013. Total 166 plant species belonging to 128 genera, under 54 families have been recorded. The leading plant families which play a key role in formation of the vegetation in Turanala wetland were Asteraceae (18 species), Poaceae (14 species), Cyperaceae (12 species), Scrophulariaceae (10 species) and Amaranthaceae (10 species). The majority (61%) of species displayed small sized flowers, less than 5 mm in diameter. 45 % species have white or green coloured flowers while 55% species showed bright and colouful flowers. These morphological characters were helpful in pollination activities. The peak of flowering occurs during October and November. Hot and wet climate with water holding capacity of the soil makes this site more vulnerable while anthropogenic pressure, grazing and other human activities altered reproductive phenology.
