Abstract

Abstract

This paper, presents an empirical analysis of climate change and soil degradation, its economic impact on cassava product in Ondo State with special reference to Akoko North West local government area. Data used for this study is from primary source. The data consists of 300 respondents selected from ten towns/villages in the study area using purposive sampling technique; only 280 cases were useful. Structured interview guide were used to collect relevant information from the respondents. The data were collated through frequency distribution and were analysed through chi-square. From the study, it was concluded that inadequate supply of rain fall, excessive drought, poor soil and non-utilization of fertilizers lead to a reduction in the production of cassava. Most farmers could not meet their needs not to talk of affording the education of their children. It is therefore recommended that drought resistant cassava stems be introduced to the farmers in the study area. Overgrazing by the Fulanis should be discouraged. Fertilizers should be sold to the genuine farmers at subsidized rate. These will go a long way to increase cassava production and the farmers’ income.
