Abstract

Abstract

The present study describes the length-weight relationships and condition factor of a freshwater fish of Dawkinsia filamentosa (Valenciennes, 1844), southern Western Ghats, Tamilnadu, India. A total of 103 fishes were sampled from four mid-order streams (Thalaianai, Iluppaiyar, Gadana and Gundar). Fish samples were caught from March to May 2013. The linear regression parameters ‘a’ and ‘b’ of the length-weight relationship were estimated as W=aLb are presented. The result indicates that the coefficient of ‘b’ values ranged from 2.13–3.74, with the greater ‘b’ value obtained for the habitats from Gundar River. The condition factor (K) mean value ranged from 1.37–1.53 with the highest K=1.53 at Gundar river. The determinants suggest the growth and condition factors of D. filamentosa populating the downstream river of the Tamiraparani river are excellent and fittest when equated to lower order streams.
