Turmeric: A Herb from Kitchen to Fabric

Abstract


Turmeric (Curcuma longa) or haldi, a well-known name in the kitchen, is produced from rhizomes of Curcuma longa, a member of Zingiberaceae family. It is not just a yellow colourant used to flavour Indian dishes but also a natural antiseptic used in the treatment of a number of diseases. Other than these medicinal properties turmeric is also a familiar dye as natural dyes are gaining popularity day by day. The present paper reviews about turmeric, its medicinal value and colour yielding properties.
