

Therapeutic Role of Mako (Solanum nigrum Linn): An Evidence Based Review
Abstract
Solanum nigrum Linn commonly known as Mako or black night shade usually grows as a weed found throughout India. It possesses various compounds like glycol-alkaloids, glycoproteins, polysaccharides and phenolic compounds which are responsible for its diverse activities. Though S. nigrum contains one of most dreaded plant toxin solanine, it is a potential reservoir of antioxidants having hepatoptotective, antitumor, cytostatic, anticonvulsant antiulcerogenic and anti-inflammatory effects. As per WHO calculation, about 80% of the world’s inhabitant’s problem should treated by medicinal herbal drug for their primary health care. It is widely used in many traditional systems of medicine worldwide for disparate ailments, but has not garnered attention for modern therapeutic use. So, this review would afford to know how much is known in the investigation of Solanum nigrum.
