Nitric-oxide Scavenging Antioxidant Activity of the Different Extracts of Plumeria obtusa (Family:Apocynaceae)
Abstract
Plumeria obtusa (Family-Apocynaceae) has a long ethnomedicinal tradition of being used as a remedial agent in various diseases such as diarrhoea, piles, fever, gonorrhoea, antibacterial and antitumour agents etc. Antioxidant potential of the crude petroleum ether, chloroform and methanol extracts of the leaf and bark were evaluated by using nitric oxide scavenging assay. The extracts showed significant activities compared to ascorbic acid in a dose dependent mode. Moreover, the percentage of inhibition of bark extracts were better than the leaf extracts in comparison to the percentage of inhibition of Ascorbic acid in different concentrations (10, 25, 50, 125, 250 and 500 μg/ml respectively).
