Medicinal Importance of Albizia lebbeck: A Review
Abstract
Herbs are extensively hunted these days for their medicinal potential. Isolation and purification of active phytoconstituent as drug is relatively old concept in the pharmaceutical field. Now scientists are more concerned for the wholesome use of herbs. Therefore, herbs are searched with various angles at several parameters. This paper presents a detailed description about one of such medicinally important herb named Shirish in Ayurvedic system of medicine and as Albizia lebbeck in botany. In Ayurveda, it is mainly used as antitoxin or antipoisonous drug. It is mainly indicated in allergic conditions such as allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma, urticaria etc. Analysis of phytoconstituents showed the presence of saponins, glycosides, tannins etc., and absence of steroids. Catechin is the main phytochemical responsible for its antihistaminic property.
