Isolation, Identification and Characterization of Bdellovibrio sp. from Soil and its Antibiotic Potential against Selected Bacterial Pathogens
Abstract
Bdellovibrio and Like Organisms (BALOs) are the world's smallest Gram-negative, highly motile delta-proteobacterial predators generally found in diverse environmental niches such as soil, seawater, sewage, bio films, freshwater, gastro intestinal tract of animals and in association with plant roots. These small bacteria attack gram negative bacterial strains attaching to the outer membrane and consuming the prey extracellularly (epibiotic predation) or penetrating their periplasm (periplasmic predation). Bdellovibrio exovorus MPR11 (Accession No. MH230062.1) has been isolated from horticultural soil samples using type strain Pseudomonas fluorescens-103 as host employing “Double layer agar” technique. The isolated bacterial strain was genetically identified by 16SrRNA characterization and was confirmed by Transmission (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).The lytic assay in double layer agar plate revealed the order of antibiotic efficiency of B. exovorus against the pathogens: P. mirabilis-1429T>P. syringae-673>M. bovis-1775T>B. glumae-8496>V. parahaemolyticus-451 T. The lytic assay in broth culture showed variation in antibiotic efficiency though B. exovorus MPR11 is effective to all the selected pathogens. A limited number of studies have been published on the potential of BALOs as bio-control agents and now it is coming into light as a useful antibiotic. Use of them as live antibiotic will be imperative in future since the era of antibiotics as magic–bullet against bacteria is approaching its end due to the development of resistance. The current prey and predator interactive study results indicate the possibility of B. exovorus against the pathogenic bacterial strains suggesting its use as a live antibiotic in future.
