Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) in Breast Carcinoma

Priyanka Verma

Abstract

Breast cancer is the leading problem around the world predominantly in developing parts. Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in carcinogenesis especially in breast carcinoma. Disbalance in free radical and antioxidants result in oxidative stress. Enzymes like Superoxide dismutase (SOD) are used as primary defence; they directly scavenge and inactivate reactive oxygen species (ROS). Keeping this in mind, this study has been designed to study SOD in breast carcinoma before and after surgery. For this 60 FNAC confirmed breast cancer and 30 normal controls were taken. All data presented in the result of this study were analyzed on the SPSS statistical software version 12.0. SOD in preoperative cases of breast carcinoma was found raised when compared with normal healthy control and postoperative cases. This proves that primary defence is present in adequate quantity in order to counter free radical generation.
