Impact of Tropical Cyclone “Fani” on Chilika Lake Inlet

Abstract


The Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘FANI’ made landfall on the Odisha Coast south of Puri on 3 May 2019 and the eye of the system was completely moved into land by 1000 hrs at the wind speed of 175 - 185, gusting up to 205 kmph which hit in Puri district near Chilika lake inlet. The study area is the part of Outer channel of the Chilika lake which is situated within 19°39’56.682” to 19°43’20.555” N latitude and 85°31’35.575” to 85°36’16.924” E longitude. Three new inlets are open. Two inlets are in between the inlet “A” and “B” named “C” and “D” with the width of 249 Mt and 214 Mt, respectively. Another one is the open north side of the inlet “B” named “E” with a width of 303 Mt. After cyclone “FANI”, the mouth “A” and “B” width has decreased to 481 Mt. and 340 Mt, respectively.
