Statistical Analysis on Time Spent on Internet Use by College Students: A Case Study of Butwal SubMetropolitan City, Nepal

This study aims to identify the factors associated with time spent on internet by bachelor level students under Tribhuvan University at Butwal sub-metropolitan city. This study is entirely based on primary data taken from five colleges selected purposively at Butwal Submetropolitan city of Rupandehi district. The sample of the study contains 514 students. Samples were taken by proportionate technique from each faculty from each selected college. Classes and students were randomly selected. On an average, the participants spent time on internet 26.27 h/week. There were also significant differences in the time spent using the internet among students in different fields of study, with science students spending more time online (hours per week) than the others. The descriptive information of some major variables are explained using statistical tools like mean, median, mode, standard deviation, minimum, maximum, quartiles, percentages, etc. For the inferential part of the study, independent t-test, F-test and multiple linear regression are applied. The results of the multiple linear regression model fitted for explaining natural logarithm of time spent on internet by college students shows that the factors like age, gender, part time job of student, type of college, source of internet connection, occupation of father, education level of mother, purpose of internet use for downloading, purpose of internet use for others (entertainment) and place of internet at friend’s home and place of internet use at their college have significant impact on time spent on internet use by bachelor level college student.
