As per latest Livestock census (2012), total poultry in the country is 729.2 million numbers and out of these 42.82 million poultry is in Haryana state. There is increasing trend in the population of poultry in rural areas as compared to urban areas of Haryana which indicates that there is scope of poultry industry expansion in rural areas. This can be achieved by introducing dual purpose strain of poultry which can produce more eggs than existing indigenous breeds in India and Haryana. This article deals with population dynamics of poultry in Haryana as well as India, scope of poultry farming in Haryana and various strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats involved in poultry farming.
