It is believed that the buffalo domesticated in India are the descendants of Bos arnee buffaloes, which still exists in wild type in the North-Eastern parts of India. India is home track to best riverine buffalo breeds in the world namely Murrah, Jaffarabadi, Nili-Ravi, Surti, Mehsana, Bhadawari etc which are the main stay of the dairy industry in India. The buffalo plays a crucial role for overall food security of our nation by contributing 49% of total milk production and 23% of meat production in India. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to safeguard and conserve the rich diversity of Indian buffalo breeds.
