Abstract

Banana farmers are constantly facing weather and climate risks, resulting heavy loss in the field in Nawalpur district of Nepal. Crop insurance is a key option to cope with crops loss due to windstorm, heavy rainfall and other vulnerabilities. This study was carried out to document the factor affecting adoption of banana insurance in Kawasoti Municipality of Nawalpur, Nepal. Altogether, 60 banana farmers were selected randomly from different wards of Kawasoti municipality and out of which 30 farmers were insured and 30 farmers were non- insured banana farmers. Structured questionnaires were used to collect data from selected respondents. Likewise, binary logistic regression model was used to determine the factor affecting adoption of banana insurance. The study revealed that 73.33% of insured and 20% of non-insured farmers have attended agriculture related training, while 86.67% insured banana farmers were involved in farmers groups but none among non-insured farmers. The econometric analysis shows that subsidy, owned land, agriculture training and years of schooling were statistically significant and positive factor for the adoption of banana insurance. Farmers who have attained agriculture related training, having their own tenure land, higher level of education and high amount of subsidy are more likely to have insurance. Therefore, the provision of subsidy including agriculture related training, higher education and technical advice are more likely to enhance adoption of insurance among banana farmers.
