Experimental Evaluation of Plant Extracts for Corrosion Inhibition of Metals in Acidic Medium of HCl

Chukwure Lebia Duka, Chukwuemeka Peter Ukpaka, Dagde Kenneth K.

Experimental evaluation was carried out to examine the corrosion inhibition property using Mangifera indica leaf obtained in the Niger Delta area of Nigeria. The extract from M. indica leaf was used to examine the efficiency in metal behaviours of hydrochloric acid (HCl). Metals of carbon steel, mild steel and stainless steel was used in the present research work and the characteristics of metal was measured and calculated for samples immersed in the acidic medium of HCl as well as the control. The extract obtained from M. indica leaf was a good corrosion inhibitor. The efficiency of M. indica leaf extract was determined relative to the acidic medium of HCl used for the present research work. The results obtained revealed that stainless steel has the highest efficiency in HCl medium followed by carbon steel and mild steel. Finally, the research work demonstrated the usefulness of M. indica leaf extract as a major corrosion inhibitor to be used in prevention of acidic media attack on metal corrosion.
