Ethnobotanical and Pharmaceutical Uses of Medicinal Plant Achyranthes aspera: A Review

Abstract


Achyranthes aspera is an important medicinal herb found in India as a weed. It belongs to family Amaranthaceae. It is used for treatment of many diseases due to their safety and effectiveness. It is commonly known as charchita and apamarga in Sanskrit. Different constituents are present in various parts of Achyranthes aspera such as saponin, oleanic acid, achyranthine, ecdysterone, alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids and terpenoids. It has 80% distributed in all over the world. It is useful for treatment of asthma, bleeding, boils, cough, cold, dog bite, scorpion bite, ear complications, snake bite and skin diseases. It also shows pharmacological uses like antibacterial, antifungal, antipyretic, diuretic, purgative, antiasthmatic, hepatoprotective and antiallergic. Their study areas in India are Uttar Pradesh, Aligarh, Bulandshahar and Farrukhabad. Almost all of its parts are used in traditional medicines, seeds, root and shoots are the mostly parts used in medicinally.
