Medicinal Plants for the Treatment of Malaria used by Various Tribes of Bankura, West Bengal, India

Abstract
Malaria is one of the most common major health problems all over the world. With the increasing levels of malaria parasite drug resistance, the herbal knowledge of indigenous communities for malaria treatment can play an important role in identification of any new anti-malarial drug that is yet to be discovered. The present paper documented 22 ethno-medicinal plants of Bankura district, West Bengal, India, belonging to 15 families which were used by the local herbal healers for the treatment of malaria. The medicinal plants which are used by the traditional users in Bankura district are arranged alphabetically followed by scientific name, vernacular name, family and parts used. These plants can be a potential source for the development of new anti-malarial drug. Further studies on chemical and pharmacological actions are suggested to validate the claims.
