Abstract

Abstract

Despite acknowledging that artisanal and small scale mining subsector has potential to contribute significantly to the growth of the economy of Malawi, there still remain inherent challenges that have to be surmounted for the subsector to attain its full potential. The general objective of the study was to understand the specific business-related needs of selected cooperatives and individuals involved in small scale mining. Both qualitative and quantitative study methods were employed. The findings revealed gaps to be addressed in such aspects as capacity building, value addition, markets, mineral development, financial support, sector organisation, and partnerships, among others.
