Abstract

The study aimed to isolate antibiotic resistant S. aureus from acne of college students and screening natural remedies to control acne S. aureus. Totally nine isolates exhibited yellow colonies on Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA) and the metallic black colony with a zone of clearance in Baird Parker Agar medium was used. Gram staining of these isolates exhibited Gram-positive cocci in bunches and biochemical tests revealed that the isolates were citrate positive, methyl-red positive, coagulase positive, urease positive, catalase positive and utilization of glucose, lactose and mannitol confirmed the isolates as Staphylococcus aureus. Five antibiotics tested against acne isolates, in which S6 isolate reveled resistance against Ampicillin (beta-lactam), Gentamycin (aminoglycoside), Penicillin (beta-lactam) and Erythromycin (macrolides), the isolate S11 showed resistances against Ampicillin, Erythromycin, and Penicillin, the isolate S5 and S7 exhibited resistances against Erythromycin. Among tested antibiotics, Ciprofloxacin (fluoroquinolones) was found to be potent against all tested isolates. Natural herbs such as Aloevera, Azadirachta indica, Curcuma longa, Ocimum tenuiflorum, and Solanum lycopersicum tested against S. aureus only S. lycopersicum (18-25 mm) and A. vera (5-10 mm) was effective against antibiotic resistant S. aureus. From the present study, it was concluded that the indiscriminate use of antibiotics should be avoided to prevent the development of resistant isolates of the S. aureus and adapting natural remedies are effective in its control.
