Abstract

Objective: to evaluate the safety of Unani drug Maghz-e-Jamun(Eugenia jambolana) in Prediabetes. Research design and methods: It was randomized, single blind, placebo-controlled study randomly assigned to 52 prediabetic patients (diagnosed according to ADA classification) in the test and control group. Maghz-e-Jamun (Eugenia jambulana) powder 4.5 g was filled in 6 capsules, 3 capsules were administered orally twice a day in the test group for 12 weeks. While placebo prepared with starch was provided in the same form in the control group. Patients in both organizations were told to adopt the prescribed diet as given by the dietician during the protocol treatment. Patients were also questioned for 40 minutes of daily morning brisk walk. Complete haemogram, LFT, KFT and Urine R / M was performed on baseline, 28th day and 84th day of the research to assess drug and placebo safety. In addition to security measures, BSF and BSPP were also assessed on baseline, 28th and 84th day of the study. Results: No significant changes are revealed after 28 days as well as after 84 days of intervention in laboratory safety profile investigations that are complete haemogram, LFT, KFT and urine R / M. Significant reduction in FPG from (105.67 ±2.20) to (96.03 ±1.94) was noted after 28 days in prediabetics with p value 0.001 **, Furthermore, the FPG decreased to (92.13±1.50) after the 84th day of monitoring in the test group where powder of Eugenia jambolana seeds was provided. BSPP decreased after 28 days from (130.33±3.44) to (118.83±2.65) and became (121.93±3.16) after 84 days respectively with p 0.012 * and 0.071. Conclusion: Maghz-e-Jamun (Eugenia jambolana) had excellent prediabetic glucose control. It can also revert the prediabetic condition to normaloglycemia and, if backed by nutritional action and exercise, stop the transformation of prediabetic disease to type 2 diabetes.
