Ashtam Maas: Masanumasik Garbha Vruddhi Systemic Review of Garbhavkranti W.R.T 8 th Month

Sujata Kotwal, Nilesh V. Kasae

Abstract

Ayurveda is ancient science of life; many ancient texts explain Ayurveda in detail. Acharya Sushruta, who is father of surgery has described Anatomy in detail. In Garbhavkranti chapter, he has elaborated developmental embryology from 1st to 9th month. While studying 8th month development, we found statement which needs literary review to clear the concept. One of them is the development in the 8Th month of pregnancy, according to Acharya Sushrut in eight month of pregnancy, Oja i.e. maternal nutrients are not stable. If the labour takes place in this period due to unstable Oja (AiS4r Aoj) and curse of Nairutya Graha (negative energy) the foetus will not survive. For that Sushruta suggested to offer Mansa Odan to avoid curse of this Grah. Acharya Charaka has stated the Mlan and Mudit state of mother and foetus due to unstable Oja. He had also mentioned the critical condition of labour. According to Asthang Hridaya, the quotation of 8th month development of foetus, is compilation of versus from Charaka and Shushrut. Only Ashtang hrudaya differs where he mentioned the chances of survival of mother during labour is also doubtful. Full term infants are estimated to have an alveolar storage full of approximately 100 mg/kg of body weight of surfactant, while preterm infant have an estimated 4 to 5 mg/kg body weight at birth. As in preterm infant there is no sufficient quantity of surfactants there are more chances of foetal respiratory distress which ultimately decreases the chances of survival.
