In vitro/In vivo Study of Anti-inflammatory Effect of Cyperus rotundus on Diabetic Complications
Abstract
The reactive oxygen species (ROS) develop oxidative stress that contributes to the cause of human diseases. Radicals which enhance inflammation are nitric oxide, hydroxyl radical, hydrogen peroxide, and superoxide. Anion mediate and amplify the inflammation process, mediate vascular permeability and platelet aggregation leading to diabetic complications due to disruption of steady state of pro-oxidants and antioxidants. Cyperus rotundus plant extract was subjected to foraging radical activity with hemolysate sample to prove the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in prevention of diabetic retinopathy (DR). The present study results showed that the compounds in the extract react with NO and prevent the nitrite and peroxynitrite anions generation. Thus the scavenging activity of NO by the extract acts as a supplementation of antioxidants. Also the Aldose reductase (AR) inhibitory activity of extract with various concentrations was carried out with rat eye lens of 9 week old male rats whose results exhibited with an IC50 73.2 µg/ml. Thus C.rotundus extract used for the investigation holds all the phytochemicals which are proven to have inhibitory effect on oxidative damage and suppresses AR activity which is the main enzyme in onset of DR.
