Extraction and Application of Natural Dye from Nerium oleander
Abstract
The present study involves extraction of dye from Nerium oleander flower using varied percentage (10%, 20%, 5%, 10%) of different solvents and different methods (water bath, sonicator bath, microwave oven and shaker incubator). Extraction with different solvents (distilled water, ethanol, chloroform, methanol) and extraction methods were found to exhibit differential extraction of dye and it was evident by the intensity of dye extract. Absorption maximum of the extracted dye using various solvents and extraction methods showed 425 nm indicating the presence of similar pigment in all the extracts. Based on the optical density obtained for different dye extract and extraction methods the aqueous extract using sonicator bath yielded greater dye intensity. The qualitative phytochemicals analysis of different extracts showed the presence of bioactive phytochemicals such as carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids and sterols. The 20% aqueous extract was used to study as indicator in acid base titration, in substitute to phenolphthalein indicator and the results revealed that dye pigment in the extract was equally good as phenolphthalein indicator. The extract was also used for dying fabric cloth using moderants. The dyed cloth showed resistance to washing with detergent and also exposure to light. Therefore the dye extract can be used in textile industry as an ecofriendly natural dye. Colour fastness for washing at 40°C for 30 min for the Nerium oleander extract was graded as 1 indicating that colour bleeding was observed less upon washing.
