Synergistic Reinforcement of Graphene Oxide-polyvinyl Alcohol Bionanocomposite to Enhance Mechanical Performance
Abstract
Due to excessive depletion of natural sources, it is mandatory to exploit biopolymer nanocomposites to get rid of hazardous environmental issues. In this work, GO is used as nanofiller reinforcement in PVA matrix which has been fabricated via solution casting methodology (a biomimetic approach). The results showed that a small amount of graphene oxide content could enhance the mechanical as well as thermal properties of PVA-GO nanocomposites. At 1.5% GO addition, tensile strength of 69 MPa is observed which is very high in comparison to pristine PVA. SEM morphology revealed homogeneous dispersion of GO nanoparticles throughout the polymer matrix. AFM topography examined the increase in roughness on addition of nanofiller. Thermal stability is increased on integration of GO nanoparticles. The resultant nanocomposites are well suited for structural and packaging applications.
