S Sivajothi, B. Sudhakara Reddy

Abstract

Out of 36 sheep in a flock, 14 were showing signs of scabies including alopecia, crusts formation with superficial skin fissures, hyperkeratosis and itching. Distribution of the lesions was noticed over the nose bridge, around the muzzle and margins of the ear pinna. Microscopic examination of the skin scrapings revealed the presence of adult mites of Sarcoptesscabie. The affected sheep were separated from healthy groups and divided into two groups. In group-I, animals was treated with ivermectin @ 200 μg/kg body weight subcutaneously and in group-II, animals were treated with ivermectin @200 μg/kg body weight along with an external application of neem leaves paste. Clinical improvement was recorded in both the groups by the disappearance of the skin lesions and parasitological examination of skin scrapings revealed no evidence of adult mites in both the groups.
