Antimicrobial Activity of Actinomycetes Isolated from Garden Soil and Role of Various Antibiotics in Promoting Its Growth

Actinomycetes are a group of Gram-positive, sporulating, bacteria which exhibit mycelia branching during growth. These are common inhabitants of soil. They provide many important bioactive compounds which are of high commercial value. However, antibiotics are predominately produced. In the present study, actinomycetes was isolated from garden soil and its growth was tested in different media such as Kustners media, actinomycetes isolation agar, yeast extract agar and Kenknights agar. The culture was identified biochemically by its ability to hydrolyze proteins and its response to other biochemical tests. Role of antibiotics in promoting the growth of actinomycetes and its susceptibility to various concentrations of them was evaluated.
