Anti-infective Investigations of Methanolic Extract and Petroleum Ether Extract of Ixora coccinea L. Flowers

Abstract


Ixora is an evergreen flowering tropical plant belonging to the family Rubiaceae. It is commonly found in India, the United States of America, Africa, South East Asia, and Southern Asia. Across the globe, several species (Ixora coccinea, I. parviflora, I. chinensis, I. macrothyrsa, I. javanica, and I. finlaysoniana) of this genus have been identified so far. After going through the literature available in pharmaceutical databases, it was found that the no work has been done so far in exploring the anthelmintic (Pheretima posthuma) potentials of methanolic extract of I. coccinea flower as well as investigating the anti-bacterial (Salmonella typhi) and anti-fungal (Candida albicans) perspectives along with phytochemical analysis. The activity produced by the flower extracts were mediated by the therapeutically active phytochemical classes such as alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, steroids, and phenols. The interesting investigation opened new perspectives towards modern herbal pharmacotherapeutics against human intestinal worms and harmful pathogens (nosocomial diseases).
