Abstract

Lemongrass, Cymbopogon citratus (Poaceae-Gramineae), is an important source of ethnomedicines as well as citral, the primary component of Cymbopogon citratus, which is used in the cosmetic perfumery, and pharmaceutical industries for pathogen control. The word "lemon" comes from the aroma of the plant, which is mostly accountable to the existence of citral, a cyclic monoterpene. Initial research on lemongrass extracts (tea) may have disclosed inconsistent pieces of evidence; however, the growing number of claims made by folk medicine practitioners necessitates a closer look into the tea's use. Lemongrass tea was shown to be non-mutagenic, non-toxic, and it is largely used by medical practitioners in various underdeveloped nations. Cymbopogon citratus essential oil is considered to be therapeutic.  It is broadly utilized in classical medicine and has a wide range of biological activity. Cymbopogon citratus, a perennial aromatic grass endemic to Sri-Lanka and also in South India, is now broadly planted throughout tropical Asia and America. Ayurvedic medicine makes appreciable use of the herb. According to research, Cymbopogon citratus has several pharmacological properties like anti-mutagenecity, anti-inflammatory, anti-diarrheal, anti-amoebic, anti-bacterial, anti-filarial, and anti-fungal qualities are among its many benefits. These conclusions are very promising, and the purpose of this literature review was to learn more related to the plant to authenticate above mentioned interpretation and seek other familiar therapeutic properties.
