Performance Evaluation and Stability Analysis of Medium Seeded Common Bean (Phaseolus Vulgaris L.) Varieties in Siltie And Gurage Districts Of Southern Ethiopia

Mukerem Elias Sultan

Abstract

Field experiment was conducted with eight medium seeded for two consecutive years (2020 - 2021) comprising three environments (Mareko, Sankura and Abeshge). The objective of this study was to identify and select high yielding and best performing medium seeded common bean varieties for wide and specific adaptability. Eight medium seeded common bean varieties were used. Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications was used. Data was analyzed using R software version 3.4. The combined analysis of variance showed yield was highly significant differences (P<0.001) among locations, varieties and location by variety interactions. The significant differences for location by variety interaction indicated the necessity of identifying stability of varieties across locations. Remeda variety had given highest mean yield performance at all locations. In addition to this variety, Gogebe variety had given best performed and gave highest yield at Sankura location. Principal component analysisI had contributing 58.70% of the total variation. The AMMI analysis, AMMI stability value (ASV) and yield stability index (YSI) identified that, Remeda and GLP-2 were the most stable medium seeded common bean varieties with higher yields. Therefore, those varieties could be recommended for tested locations and similar agro-ecologies of the Southern Region.
