Preliminary Phytochemical and Pharmacognostical Investigation of Barleria buxifolia L.
Abstract
Abstract
During the past several decades, traditional systems of medicines have become a topic of global relevance. Current estimate suggests that in many underdeveloped countries, a large proportion of the population rely heavily on traditional practitioners and local herbals to meet the primary health care needs. Under these circumstances, only a few plants of medicinal value have been successfully evaluated for their medicinal applications. Safety and efficacy data are available only for fewer plants. There are thousands of medicinal plants which deserve comprehensive scientific standardization and evaluation. In the present study, pharmacognostical and preliminary phytochemical screening of Barleria buxifolia L. (Acanthaceae) was carried out. The physico-chemical studies like fluorescence analysis will help to know the quality of the drugs. The preliminary phytochemical results suggested that the plants have enormous secondary metabolites like alkaloids, steroids, terpenoids, quinines and phenolic compounds. The findings will help to standardization and validation of the selected medicinal plant.
