ROLE OF NATURAL PROPERTY RESOURCES (NPRs) IN THE LIVES OF RURAL TRIBAL PEOPLE IN ARUNACHAL PRADESH: A CASE STUDY

Abstract


The tribes constitute a small but important element in India’s population. Thesedescendents of some of the earliest inhabitants of this sub-continent have contributed to the variety and richness of cultural forms in the country. Objective: The aim of the study is to explore the food items of the rural tribal people in remote areas of Arunachal Pradesh. Methodology: Data are collected from 12 villages in 3 districts. The respondents were selected from the age group (30–60) years, as this age group is particularly responsible and sensible to earn a livelihood for their family. The respondents are again divided into 50:50 ratios between males and females. Findings and Discussion: Because they contribute so much to their communities, NPRs are vital to them. Wealthy local forests and other readily available resources can occasionally serve as these communities' main source of food or a fallback. Through roots, plants, leaves, flowers, fruits, vegetables, seeds, meat from wild animals, etc., these resources give local communities access to a wide variety of food. Results: Canned meat from NPRs is used as a significant source of protein. Examples of this meat include rabbits, deer, pigs, rats, snakes, and monkeys. But the forest laws restricted these practices. Conclusion: NPRs are the basis for rural livelihood development. Forests are important natural resources, providing livelihoods to rural communities and lots of environmental services to human settlements.
